Presentation of Berkovitsa Municipality

Berkovitsa municipality is located in the north-west of Bulgaria, in the southern part of the Montana district and is one of the component municipalities of the region. With an area of 465,043 km2, it is the second largest of the 11 municipalities of the Montana district, which makes up 12.8% of the region's territory. Berkovitsa has as neighbours the following municipalities: Montana, Krivodol, Varshets, Georgi Damyanovo and Godech.

The municipality has 20 settlements with a total population of 15520 inhabitants (as of 31.12. 2021), consisting of the municipal centre, the town of Berkovitsa and 19 villages: Barziya, Borovtsi, Zamfirovo, Yagodovo, Slatina, Gaganitsa, Komarevo, Kostentsi, Chereshovitsa, Kotenovtsi, Mezdreya, Bokilovtsi, Bistrilitsa, Pesochnitsa, Leskovets, Parlichevo, Balyuvitsa, Rashovitsa and Tsvetkova Bara.

Berkovitsa municipality is located in the mountainous and semi-mountainous part of the Western Balkan Mountains. The highest point is Kom Peak (2016 m), and the lowest point is in the village of Borovtsi (250 m). The average altitude is about 450 m, and the town of Berkovitsa is located at an altitude of 405 m. 15 km from the town and 12 km from the Petrohan Pass, 1500 m above sea level, is the tourist and sports complex "Kom". In the area of the village of Barziya there is a mineral spring with a water temperature of 31.8°C, which is used for balneotherapy.

Due to the beauty of its unspoilt nature, the Berkovska Mountains are a wonderful place for tourism, sport and relaxation. The curative climate, mineral waters, absence of dry summer and harsh winter wind, mild and sunny winter and cool summer are favourable conditions for relaxation and full recovery.
